5 Reasons Why Portraits Are Important

5 Reasons Why Portraits Are Important

Portraits remain a part of our human history; From Julius Caesar’s face on the denarii of Ancient Rome, the ever mysterious Mona Lisa and her famous smile, all the way to the Itty-Bitty Ylva last month. In our world of camera phones and selfies, one might say we have no need for professional portraits. Well, I’m here to say, Nay! Viva La Portrait! Here are 5 reasons why portraits are important in today’s world!

1. You Do Too Much!

You work, you have kids to care for, a living space to keep, and let’s not even get into that never ending pile of laundry! With everything going on in your life, you barely have time to eat, let alone to think about yourself! We’ve all been there and it’s overwhelming. We don’t take time out of our day-to-day lives to indulge in ourselves. In fact, I’d venture to say we would feel guilty if we did focus on our own wants.

This is why I believe personal portraits are so important. It’s you giving yourself permission to go ahead and dress up, say “I look damn good!” and make some photos to prove it! You are a beautiful (and/or handsome) person. The camera & we as photographers already know that! We just like to bring it out for you to see for yourself!

2. Track Growth

These babies! They grow up so quickly! Capturing each and every detail during newborn or baby portrait sessions is priceless, and a must, because within a month your child will look totally different. Showing their personalities in photos and seeing them grow is so sweet! And as a recent newborn photographer, I can say that this is one of the most satisfying forms of photography because of all the love surrounding each session! For a couple of hours, I feel like I’m a part of the family and I care for each child like they are my baby brother or sister.

3. Express Creativity

Creative portraits speak to my heart. It’s all about showing the world as you see it, or creating an entirely different world you want to experience. Most of us spend our days in an office while longing to be elsewhere. Some of us have dreams we’ve never fulfilled or felt we could never really achieve. Creative portraiture allows you to express your creativity and paint yourself into the kind of light you’ve always wanted. It’s a fun and collaborative project!

4. Make Memories

Family portraits are the perfect way to make fun memories with your entire family! Playing together at home, at a park, or trying out a new activity makes for great bonding time and family photos! Usually one parent is left out of the fun because they’re snapping a shot. Or, you’re simply too busy having fun to even think about whipping the camera out! Family portraits keep the memories while letting you enjoy that time with your loved ones.

5. Portraits Are Invaluable

Unfortunately, our time here is limited. Tomorrow is not promised. Portraits provide an invaluable way of making our brief time on Earth everlasting. Our future generations have something beautiful by which to remember us and we have something meaningful to leave for them; Pieces of our story. Not to mention, your baby’s baby’s can look back and say, “Wow, my great-grandma looked damn good!” and you’ll look down with a smile and say, “That’s right, sweetie…that’s right.”
